June BLOG. ' Change means progress!'

Hello, English learners!

For anyone who is not familiar with the 'Callan Method', it is an extremely effective system for learning English that has been in existence since the 1960s.

The Callan Method employs a ‘direct’ technique, whereby the teacher asks questions of the student twice and then answers with them, correcting any mistake they might make in their reply.

The Callan Method is popular in Japan, especially among students who need to improve their speaking and listening skills, which are the hardest facets of using English for a non-native. They are especially useful for students wishing to improve their TOEIC score or taking an EIKEN exam.

Have you ever found that it is easy to rehearse your speech or lines, but when the other person replies too quickly or asks you an unexpected question, you panic and freeze? You feel embarrassed and are then unable to continue the conversation? …Callan prepares students for this kind of everyday situation, which the majority of other English schools cannot do as effectively.

Since its original inception, the Callan Method has been rewritten to make it easier to use and reflect the changes to the English language over the last 60 years.

Now in 2025, 3R-English are pleased to announce that we have received the latest, 3rd edition Callan textbooks and have started rolling these out amongst our intermediate-level students.

Whilst the books might look the same, there are numerous updates, such as including more practical and modern content. The books now explore questions about the world on a more geopolitical and environmental level as well as content regarding the technology we use everyday. We believe students will find the English more useful and realistic.

Intermediate and advanced students will be familiar with the format of ‘open questions’ which are often asked during Callan lessons. They are are designed to test your ability to form your opinion with the help of the teacher, rather than answer yes or no or proffer a statement, which is a typical way of communicating amongst Japanese people. With the Callan Method and our native British English teacher, we can train you to think as a native English speaker and enjoy the freedom to express your opinions during English-only conversations.

We hope that you enjoy using the 3rd edition books and their accompanying Callan English application.

We look forward to teaching you soon and helping you achieve your goals.
